When a server backup program utilizes Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), sometimes you have to fix problems when one or more of the writers fails or disappears. This can usually be repaired by running a script that re-registers the various DLLs used by VSS. But we ran into a problem on one server that defied this traditional fix. Even though the script was executed and the server rebooted several times, the System Writer would disappear every time the backup was attempted.
